On September 27th, over homecoming weekend, the John Burroughs Bombers Boys’ Soccer team played an away game against the MICDS Rams, which went into a thrilling double overtime. The starting lineup consisted of Kaden Bradley (#3), Ryan Padousis (#9), Oscar Scully (#24), Corbin Riley (#19), Ben Zerega (#8), Alden Chao (#11), Nate Harms (#30), William Miller (#12), Ignacio Moyano (#20), Beni Moyano (#15), and myself, Josiah Harrison (#36). The game was a battle from start to finish.
Defender Kaden Bradley consistently booted the ball from goal kicks with ease, sailing it over MICDS’ backline. He was even able to get a strong shot off from the bottom of the midfield circle.
William Miller and Ignacio Moyano both ran tirelessly, passing through balls and providing passes that created chances for everybody to score.
Freshman Beni Moyano had another stellar performance, powering through MICDS’ toughest players with his skillful dribbling and complete focus. He provided perfect balls that would either sail over the opposing team’s backline or through two players attempting to steal it.
In the back, Corbin Riley and Alden Chao stepped up against the fastest player on MICDS’ team, matching his speed and preventing him from making any dangerous runs down the middle or the wings to cross or shoot.
Meanwhile, Arjun Krishnasamy had a legacy performance, fighting through hard slide tackles and uncalled fouls to get 2-3 shots on goal. He refused to quit and pushed the opponent’s goalie to the point of near exhaustion.
As the goalie, I was able to direct my team to where they needed to be so that I wasn’t worried, and I only received the ball roughly a dozen times during the entire game. With tactful throws, punts, and rolls, I was able to provide my backline with uncontested distributions to ensure chances of getting the ball back up the field. In the middle of the second half, the Rams had a free kick, which forced me to dive into the air and make an exciting save. This kept us in the game at 0-0.
Finally, in the first half of a double overtime, Ryan Padousis and Arjun Krishnasamy each gave 110%. They broke through the Rams’ defense, and Arjun got a quick shot off. Their goalie saved it, but left it bouncing within his box. Arjun noticed this, and in no time, he raced for the ball and kicked it into the back of the goal, scoring the winning goal of the game and sealing a golden Bomber victory against the Rams.
With a final score of 1-0, the Bombers walked away with a shutout victory in the most nail-biting match we’ve had all season.
